Sclerotherapy and Microsclerotherapy is suitable for the treatment of small varicose veins and spider veins.
The fine dark red veins in the picture are an example of varicose veins suitable for treatment with Sclerotherapy and Microsclerotherapy. It is suitable for the treatment of small sized varicose veins and spider veins. Ultrasound is not required because the veins being treated can be seen on the surface of the leg. A very fine needle is inserted into the centre of the vein and a precise amount of solution in injected into the vein causing the vein to close off. The procedure involves minimal discomfort. Usually 15-20 injections are required and it takes 15-30 minutes. You will need to wear a compression stocking for 2-3 weeks after the treatment and walk for 45 mins each day while wearing the stocking.
This is an outpatient procedure and you will be able to return to work the same day. Heavy exercise should be avoided for 4 weeks. You may need more than one treatment and you need to wait 6-8 weeks between treatments on the same leg. See FAQS.
The solutions used in Sclerotherapy and Microsclerotherapy are called Sclerosants. The lining of the vein wall is made up of protein and fat. The Sclerosants used are a special detergent that breaks down the lining of the vein wall, causing the vein to collapse and trapping some blood in the vein. Over time the trapped blood and the fragments of the treated vein are absorbed into the tissues. This usually takes a few weeks for small veins to many months for larger veins.
