Historical Treatments for Varicose Veins and other New Vein Treatments

Surgical removal of varicose veins by the traditional method of "stripping" has been the mainstay of treatment for centuries but since the late 1990's new techniques of nonsurgical treatment have proved to be superior in terms of reducing the risk of recurrence and reducing the inherent risks and invasive nature of surgery. There are still rare situations where surgery is necessary. These newer techniques listed above take less time and have much shorter recovery times. Most patients can return to work and normal activities immediately after treatment or the next day.

There are other new treatments available but not used by the Varicose Vein Clinic. This is because these treatments are either less effective, have a higher complication rate or too new to be fully assessed. The treatments used by the Varicose Vein Clinic including Endovenous Laser Ablation, Ultrasound Sclerotherapy, Sclerotherapy and Radiofrequency Ablation have been extensively used around the world, thoroughly researched and assessed over several decades. These provide the 'Gold Standard' for the treatment of varicose veins.
